Mum and Dad looked at each other.

Lucy made a pile of the money and things from the show, and gave it to Dad, and did a little curtsey. ‘It’s for you and Mum,’ she said. ‘From me and Will. Because of being poor this year with all those tacks.’

Dad stared at it.

‘Is that what you’ve been doing all this time?’ Mum said. ‘Was the money always going to be for us?’

‘All of it,’ Lucy said. ‘Really. And the car wash token.’

‘And the bubble gum,’ Will said. ‘It’s only got a few toothmarks in it.’

Dad gave an embarrassed grin. He scratched an ear and coughed. They all looked at him.

‘This is very nice,’ he said. ‘Very, very nice. And I know I thought we were going to be really poor this year,’ he said. ‘But, you see’ — he scratched his ears a lot more — ‘I made a mistake.’

‘What sort of mistake?’

‘A mistake with my tax.’

‘Was it a bad mistake?’

‘No, it was a good one. I got all my sums wrong on my tax form. It turns out I don’t have to pay money to the tax people after all. In fact,’ he added, ‘they have to pay a bit of money to me.’
